Turn Slurry into a Cost-Effective Cattle Bedding Alternative with the HBC
HBC Biocell - Pasteurised Hygienic Bedding

T-T Agricultural and Environmental, in partnership with Cri-Man, are paving the way for sustainable and cost-effective farming practices by utilising a material that most livestock farmers have in abundance: slurry.

The HBC – which stands for Hygeinizing BioCell – is an aerobic digester that turns separated solid manure into a pasteurised alternative to traditional livestock bedding such as sawdust and sand. This is done through the process of bio-drying (or bio-stabilisation): the aerobic biological degradation of organic substances present in slurry.

This process is highly exothermic (hot, hot and hotter), with the slurry maintaining a temperate of 70°C for at least 60 minutes to evaporate the material’s water content and ensure pasteurisation. The end result is a hygienic, recycled solid material that is sustainable, saves money on traditional livestock bedding and has the added benefit of reducing your on-site slurry storage requirements!

How does it work?

  1. Raw slurry is collected in the reception pit and kept homogenised by a mechanical Cri-Man TBM mixer.
  2. A Cri-Man PTS chopper pump feeds the raw slurry up to the separator.
  3. The separated solid fraction, now above 35% dry matter, then enters the HBC.
  4. The organic material is then continuously mixed and fresh air incorporated to encourage natural fermentation.
  5. Anaerobic processes raise the internal temperature to 70°C, enabling full pasteurisation of the product.
  6. The system will only allow the RMS to be discharged once it is 100% pasteurised.

Quick facts

  • All HBC systems are provided with fll UK veterinarian certification
  • The HBC can produce up to 20 tonnes of hygienic solids a day.
  • Pasteurisation is guaranteed, with the solid matter passing through at 70°C for an hour.
  • The resulting bedding consist of up to 60% dry material.
  • The HBC is a modular system and can be transported in a 20ft container.
  • Separating your slurry reduces its required storage space, freeing up room on your site and reducing the risk of a spill or environmental incident.
  • Return on investment is achieved in 3 to 5 years.

There are four HBC models available depending the size of your herd – 250, 500, 100 and 2500. You can find the HBC and an example of the hygienic bedding it produces on T-T’s stand at LAMMA 2025.
